2 Questions:
1) Anyone able to get the V for Victory series games ("Market Garden",
"Gold-Juno-Sword" or Velikiye Luki") to work on a G4 or better.
2) Are there any other operational level hex base games similar out
there that will work on a G4? I prefer WW2 or later.
Thanks!

I haven't tried so I don't know the answer. In fact, I have never even owned
the games, to my regret. But I have heard that there are some early Mac OS
emulators out there somewhere that will run heritage games on later boxes.
You might look into that.
If anyone in this group knows anything at all concrete on this issue, I'd
like to hear about it, as given the dearth of really interesting games (IMO)
that have come out for the Mac in the last half dozen years, I think I might
like to go back and give some of the older ones a try.

At one point, I set up Basilisk II for the purpose of trying to play
Master of Orion II with some success. Basilisk II on OS X currently (or at
least as of several months ago) has no sound support, which was
disappointing. It's also a bit too slow for MoO2, although it was playable
enough. I'm sure the speed would be fine for less-demanding games on a
reasonably-recent Mac. Some sort of PC would probably be even better
because of the sound thing.
Note that Basilisk II is rather hard to set up. The ROM files it requires
are hard to find, and probably the best OS for it, System 7.1, is not
freely distributed by Apple.
I still have my collection of Mac ROM files and a nice hard disk image
with 7.1 installed, as well as the 7.1 install disks. For obvious reasons
I won't post them anywhere. However, I would not be completely opposed to
sending them to interested persons if said persons would contact me by
e-mail. Just be aware that this is a technically-challenging project and
you should be fine. >> Stay informed about: V for Victory Games |

Given that I am somewhat technically challenged already, I may put off going
down this road...in fact, you can pretty well bank on it. But I will keep
your generous offer in mind in case I decide to take the plunge. Thanks for
posting.

First, I kinda tried to get the V4V games running on my G4 ibook, and
had no luck. You might be better off buying an old laptop at a swap
meet for some of the older games. I'm seriously thinking about it.
Second, so far no one in this thread has mentioned the World at War
series (Operation Crusader, Stalingrad, & DDay (America Invades); V4V's
successors), so I don't know if you all have these already, or were
unaware that the games are available (free) on the internet (both Mac
and PC versions).
And, last Friday night, I scanned my Stalingrad manual (~17mb; color)
and will probably be uploading it to Underdogs as soon as they reply to
my email.
Finally, this evening I installed & ran a demo of Close Combat II (in
Classic OS9), 'cause I haven't found a working copy of the entire game
yet. And I also really like TacOps, though it reflects modern warfare,
not WWII. I just started playing the demo, but will probably need to
purchase the full game, because it's very cool.
Cheers.

You don't mention Combat Mission. Have you given it a look?

Several users and I are working now on adding WWII items to TacOps4 for the
period 1939-1942. The current plan is to develop and tweak the WWII mod via
a series of free patches for TacOps4 customers. I hope to put out the first
patch within a few weeks.

Combat Mission would not run on my iBook, due to the RAVE issue. I hear
it's great, but so far no luck. I read the devevelopers are working on
an OSX version. I look foward to that. Hopefully the OSX version will
include ALL of the previous version rolled into one.
I also look forward to the WWII "stuff" in TacOps. >> Stay informed about: V for Victory Games |

I posted several times to their board, and at the time of that posting
(about a year ago) they told me that they weren't pursuing an OS X
version, weren't considering it, that it was "Apple's fault", and that
choosing to move to a computer that didn't run OS 9 was my choice,
while staying with OS 9 was their choice.
I was amazed.

A little miscommunication here. What they wre saying was that there would be
no X version of CMx1 (CMBO, CMBB, CMAK), and indeed there won't.
However, they are working on a rewrite of the engine (codenamed CMx2) that
*will* run under X. This is projected to be out in its first incarnation by
the end of this year or early next year.

I don't understand.
There will be a new version of the game engine, but not of the game?
To a guy like me, that's the same thing, unless there will be a new
game to go along with the new engine.
I'm afraid I don't understand what you're saying.

BFC has been playing their cards close to their chest, so there's been
little that is definite. What they have said is that the new engine will be
more flexible so that games of different eras can be modeled in it. They
haven't specified what the range of eras is, but the impression is that it
will at minimum cover everything from WW II to modern. Speculation among
players has run that it should go back as far as Napoleonic, but no official
word on that. There have also been mutterings that SF games could be created
it it, but I don't know how serious that is.
BFC has also hinted that they may license the engine to out-of-house
developers. I think they may want to stick with WW II and let other
developers do the non-WW II games. Recent hints that Steve has dropped
suggest that WW II is the area that they are primarily interested in
themselves and want to stick with.
Sooo... I expect the first game or two to cover some of the same ground as
CMx1. Namely, WW II in Europe. But that's just my own guess.

The new game engine will have a new game associated with it. The old
scenarios - CMBO, CMBB, CMAK - will not run with the new engine. Unless
they change their mind and code it.
From what I heard when I last talked with them, the new engine runs with
more detail and with more accurate co-ordinates and sizes for things.
Thus, to move the old scenarios to the new engine would take a noticable
amount of work. Not impossible, of course, but not free, and thus
unless they hear about a lot of demand for the old scenarios, they are
not going to do that work.

You got it - a new game to go along with the new engine.

Precisely so. The new engine will require a new game.
> I'm afraid I don't understand what you're saying.
Battlefront.com for various technical and business reasons was not
able/willing to move their current offerings to Mac OS X. The basic
reason has to do with different (lesser) graphics support under OS 9
Classic and OS 9 full boot. Changing that would require rewriting the
game engine, which was not economically viable. Moving forward with
their new game engine, the next game release with that new system will
work with OS X.
They will not be moving their existing games to the new engine.
Instead, they will be developing a new game set in the same time period
(WWII) that will run using the new engine.
No firm schedule for release has been announced, although hints and
rumors suggest sometime in early 2006.
