I seem to be getting fairly regular crash to desktops running EU2 under
Panther (seemingly associated with sounds being played). Anyone else
noticed this? I never had crashes before.

I also encountered a little bug unrelated (presumably) to Panther:

Playing as Denmark, I desperately wanted to get some maps of the wide
world (Denmark doesn't get any explorers until 1610, and it gets pretty
boring if you've assimilated Sweden & more or less unified the rest of
the non-English Protestant world).

So I started a little war involving England, on the theory that a naval
victory against them would give me access to their explorations. Sure
enough, after a few battles I received the "Stolen Rutters" message...
but DIDN'T get any more of the map revealed! (England definitely knows
about places, given its stream of colonists.)

Tried the same thing against Spain - same result. Got "Stolen Rutters"
but no map knowledge!!

I am pretty sure I have gained knowledge by stealing rutters before, so
why it's not working on this game is puzzling.

Conveniently enough, the mighty 1-province empire of Flanders soon
refused my merchants access to their piddling little trade center. I
promptly landed about 40000 troops there, sacked the capital, and
captured the maps they had inherited from the Spanish when they broke
away from Spain.

I can't speak directly to your problem, but will note that I still
occasionally get crashes to desktop when trying to restart a saved game.
Annoying, especially if the autosave does the same thing. Then I have to
fall back on oldautosave, which loses me an extra year.

Yeah, that sounds kinky for sure. Every time I've stolen a rutter, I've
gained some knowledge, even if the country in question only knew a few
places I did not. Getting England's should surely have bagged you some
information.

I've definitely noticed some things that appear to be broken. Mostly they
are minor but annoying. Does anyone know if VPL is planning another patch?
It would be regretable if the game were simply abandoned by its makers in
its present state. But I know that's fairly common.
